Homecoming

October 15, 2011

Last night was the Brophy homecoming carnival.   No, there was no date involved.  Tommy went with friends and from his limited responses to my questions, I think he had fun.
I have some flu bug so I wasn't taking pictures, but my friend took this picture of Tommy with her two sons before they left for homecoming.
They are all so darn handsome!

High School

September 2, 2011

Maybe it is because I went to a public high school, but those Brophy boys are very clever and witty and I just don't remember the boys from my high school being that clever.
Yesterday was Club Day where all the clubs set up booths and recruit new members.  There are tons from what I see.  Tommy chose the NFL Club (I guess they sit around and talk about football) and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  Not sure what that is, but he said he picked it because they wear suits and ties.  He still likes to dress up after all these years, but now it's as a professional business man instead of a professional athlete.
Here are the pictures the BCP Student Council posted to Facebook.  I love the signs...I guess if the Xavier girls are part of the club that's a big selling point.  Notice how many signs boast that they have girls.  I was a tad disappointed that there was not a picture of a Democrats Club or even an Independents Club.  Maybe they exist, but were too swamped for a good photo.  And the Right to Life Club surprised me but it is a Catholic school after all.
I think I want to come back in my next life as a Brophy student.  It looks so fun.

Cross Your Fingers...

August 8, 2011

Send good thoughts, prayers for low scores, anything that may give Tommy some good luck on the golf course today.  This is the first day of try-outs for the Brophy golf team.  Although it is a long shot because the coach expects players with even par scores to make the team, our own Tommy is heading out today and tomorrow to play 9 holes in this miserable heat.
If he makes the cut after 2 days, he moves on to the second cuts which are 3 more days this week.
We are just hoping he doesn't get cut the first round because he would have to get that bad news on his birthday.  That would suck.

Yesterday was a convocation ceremony (is that redundant?) for the freshmen.  They all looked so handsome in their "mass dress" (slacks, button down shirt, and ties).  As the priests, principal, and alumni were speaking I swear I had to work hard not to tear up.  In four short years my baby will be off to college.  I am having a much harder time sending him on to high school than I did sending him to kindergarten.  I think because in 4 years he will be ready and able to make it on his own and excited to be off to new adventures.  When he started kindergarten the new adventure awaiting him was the big-kid playground and he was only going to  3rd grade in four years...not college some place far from me.

So I am going to try and savor every day he is still here and wanting to hang around the house until this time in 2015 when I will be helping him move into a dorm room somewhere.
Here is how handsome he looked yesterday.

Not Ready For This

January 6, 2011

Today Tom and I spent a fair amount of time emailing each other about Tommy's upcoming high school application and references.  He is applying to Brophy, where Tom went.  An all-male Jesuit high school.  I am probably the most invested in him attending for reasons I can't quite articulate.  It just seems to be such an amazing opportunity to make lifelong friendships, get an outstanding education, learn to serve others, and just have an amazing high school experience.  My own high school experience was, honestly, awful.  Too much drama and insecurity and not enough direction or expectations.
But, back to Tommy.  We have the interview lined up, the entrance exam is Saturday, and all requests for recommendations are out.  All that is left to do is Tommy's own essay.  His first attempt was rather pitiful.  In essence, it said: my dad went to Brophy and I hope to go college.  That'll get him in for sure!!  Ha.
I am sure he will improve after a little more cajoling.
You can read about Brophy here.  Who wouldn't want to go here?
