What I Did on My Summer Vacation - Part Deux

August 12, 2012

After four absolutely lovely days in Mont Tremblant, we packed up and headed off for our day of driving.  Tom & I decided that since were so close to where my dad grew up, we would take a drive through Trois Rivieres.  "Close" being relative, as in Trois Rivieres is a 3 hour drive from Mont Tremblant, and Phoenix is a 6 hour flight away.  We navigated our way to Trois Rivieres.  We could not find the right cemetery, but we did find (I think) the spot where his middle school used to be.  It is still a school, but I am guessing from the looks of it, that the actual buildings were torn down and rebuilt.

We found the building he lived in as very young child: 43 St. Maurice, third floor.  There's a basement apartment in this building, so even though it looks like 2 stories, I think this is the right one.

This is the view down St. Maurice

This is what much of the town looked like: three-story brownstone-like buildings.
Then we found the Catholic church where he was baptised.  Very pretty on the outside.  It was closed, so we didn't get inside.

We found his grade school, E'cole St. Paul.  I think this looks like it may be the same building?

That's our trusty rental car in the photo.  Ooops.

After our adventure ALL around Trois Rivieres, we walked down the main street in town for a bit to eat.  We found a HUGE ice cream cone and there was a Grand Prix race somewhere in town because we could hear the cars buzzing around, but never saw them...other than this one.

We visited the port area, but there wasn't anything touristy to do or see. This is the Saint Lawrence River.  It's huge. Just look at that giant ship in the second photo.

Coming up: Montreal.

15 Already?!

August 9, 2012

Another year and Tommy is 15 today.  Oh my, I jsut keep getting more emotional with each birthday he has.  I can't help but think ahead to how quickly he will be out of our house and off to college.  (And when, by the way, did I get so old?)
I wish I could stop the clock and keep him forever.  Just yesterday I actually got an unsolicited, "I love you" when I was leaving for work.  It made my day.
Happy Birthday to the light of my life.

7th Grade Grumpies

August 8, 2012

Grace started 7th grade today.  She was not happy.  Her new backpack had not yet arrived in the mail so she had to carry last year's beat up model.  Oh the horrors!  To make things worse, she didn't have on an entirely new back-to-school outfit.  Apparently, in this 'hood a girl should be dressed head to toe in all new, never-been-seen-before-appropriate-designer outfit for the first day of school.  Never mind that it is 113 degrees outside. You must look GOOD.  The lack of new shorts caused some grumpies.  (Ignore the new t-shirt mom bought you on vacation).  To her credit, she didn't complain at all about wearing last school year's Vans.  Oh how I wish we had school uniforms.  How many years till Xavier and uniforms?
Can you guess what year each of these first-day photos are?
