First interview

I'm at Brophy waiting for Tommy to finish his interview. What a stressful experience for a 13 year old. But he seems to be pretty relaxed about it. He sure looks good in his tie.

Colonial Day

January 15, 2011

Wednesday, January 12th, was Colonial Day at Grace's school.  The kids dress in colonial period costumes (mostly).  They spend all day going to different stations like: candle making, stocks, hornbook making, cross stitching, indoor games like marbles and "some weird bean game" (Grace's words), outdoor games like tag, tug of war, and hoops.  You get the idea.  Parents volunteer to run these activities.  I worked the stocks.  Here is Grace playing with the hoop...she was pretty good at it.

And the stocks....I need some of these at home for that attitude I get from the kids.

Happy MLK Weekend!

The Beauty School Drop Out Number.  I just loved the Teen Angels' costumes.
Emmie was one of the Beauties!

Grandma & Poppy came to the Saturday show.

 BFF Alex came too.

And how cute is this...Grace's new teacher (on the left) and her math tutor who is also a Hopi teacher came to see all the 5th graders perform.  And the theater is not nearby!

We Go Together

January 8, 2011

Grace & Emmie performed in Grease last night. The singing was pretty good. The acting ...not so much. But our girls looked adorable.

Right now Tom is showing Tommy how to shave. They won't let me take a picture but his upper lip is now covered on shaving cream. Wow!

Not Ready For This

January 6, 2011

Today Tom and I spent a fair amount of time emailing each other about Tommy's upcoming high school application and references.  He is applying to Brophy, where Tom went.  An all-male Jesuit high school.  I am probably the most invested in him attending for reasons I can't quite articulate.  It just seems to be such an amazing opportunity to make lifelong friendships, get an outstanding education, learn to serve others, and just have an amazing high school experience.  My own high school experience was, honestly, awful.  Too much drama and insecurity and not enough direction or expectations.
But, back to Tommy.  We have the interview lined up, the entrance exam is Saturday, and all requests for recommendations are out.  All that is left to do is Tommy's own essay.  His first attempt was rather pitiful.  In essence, it said: my dad went to Brophy and I hope to go college.  That'll get him in for sure!!  Ha.
I am sure he will improve after a little more cajoling.
You can read about Brophy here.  Who wouldn't want to go here?

Christmas Highlights

January 2, 2011

Here are some highlights from Christmas 2010 at the Halterhome.
I didn't take my camera with me as much as I should have, but here we go:

Annual Greyhound Party at the Lambeths'.
The Lambeths spend all day picking a juicing the oodles of grapefruits we have here in Arcadia.  Then they invite us lucky neighbors over for chili dinner and some delicious (and healthy) cocktails.

Karen &  Mrs. Lambeth (Amy):
It isn't a neighborhood party with out the ping pong.  Here's the champ, Diane:

More girls: Diane, Debbie, me, Cathy

The boys!

Christmas Eve was at our house this year.  Kathy & Emmie traveled to the North Pole on Dec. 23rd and couldn't make it home in time to host their usual Christmas Eve fiesta, so we took it over this year.
Here's the cousins in front of my tree.

And the best dog ever...Ollie

Grace Christmas morning in her Christmas PJs, panda hat, and moustache of the day.
Grandma Joyce & Poppy Don came over for Christmas afternoon
Crazy Grace
Christmas morning at Kathy & Emmie's this year.

Emmie must have been really good this year because Santa brought her a microphone/kareoke thing.  Boy was it loud that morning.

Poppy opening his portrait of the 18th green at ACC from Tom & Tommy
Tommy at our house Christmas morning checking out the "coupons" from Grace which he can redeem for the days she gets to watch TV (even days in our house).
Tom figuring out his new golf bag.
Grace checking out what Santa put in her stocking.

All the decorations are down and back in their bins.   I already miss my Christmas tree.  I think it's even pretty with nothing but the beads on it.  (Sorry it's blurry).

Merry Christmas!
